Prasoon Joshi Takes Charge at Prasar Bharati Amid Push to Rebrand for Youth While Preserving Legacy

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has appointed renowned lyricist and communication strategist Prasoon Joshi as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati, signalling a strategic shift in the public broadcaster’s direction. Joshi, known for his creative leadership and nuanced understanding of mass communication, steps in at a time when Doordarshan and All India Radio are seeking to reinvent their appeal.

According to insiders, the appointment is closely tied to the government’s broader vision of repositioning Prasar Bharati as a contemporary yet credible platform. The focus is on attracting younger audiences—particularly digital-native viewers—without diluting the institution’s legacy and public service mandate.

Joshi’s background in advertising, storytelling, and cultural narratives is expected to play a key role in shaping this transition. His experience in bridging traditional values with modern messaging is seen as an asset as Prasar Bharati competes with private broadcasters and streaming platforms.

The challenge ahead lies in balancing innovation with trust, ensuring that the broadcaster remains relevant in a rapidly evolving media ecosystem while continuing to serve as a custodian of India’s diverse cultural and informational heritage.
