whispers in the corridors
NLC India Limited has signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement with the EDF – France, a French multinational electric utility company owned by the Government of France, on 27.04.2026 for exploring potential development of nuclear project in India. This signals a bold step towards expanding the Nation’s nuclear capacity.
EDF-France is the largest nuclear operator worldwide owned by the Government of France with a unique experience across the entire nuclear lifecycle, developed notably as owner-operator of Pressurized Water Reactors (“PWR”) and as engineering, procurement and construction contractor of European Pressurized Reactors (“EPR”) in France and abroad. EDF is engaged in a long-term cooperation with India to support its nuclear new build ambitions and is willing to be involved in any new nuclear project in India
The project is based on EPR (Evolutionary Power Reactor) and SMR (Small Modular Reactor) technologies that are complementary solutions for carbon-free nuclear power. The EPR is a type of nuclear reactor that belongs to the third generation of pressurised water reactors (PWRs) designed by Framatome and EDF in France, which are built on the strengths of earlier models while incorporating advanced safety features and greater efficiency.
India has ambitious target of achieving 100 GW of Nuclear power capacity by 2047 to support its “Viksit Bharat” and “Net Zero Carbon”. The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill was passed in parliament on 18th December 2025 to modernize the laws of governing for Nuclear sector.
NLCIL has set a target to reach 20 GW of total capacity by 2030 which includes a balanced mix of thermal power, pumped storage, solar, wind power plant, ensuring a supply of reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to the country.
By signing the above agreement with a leading Multi-National Company that specializes in Nuclear Energy, NLCIL is committed to transitioning towards cleaner and sustainable energy options, aligning with national aspirations and global environmental targets. NLCIL recognizes the paramount importance of spreading its foot prints in various power generation sectors such as Nuclear in driving its sustained growth and success.
