Ahead of southern state’s meet, Kerala assures TN of full water supply from proposed Mullaperiyar dam

In an effort to address regional safety and water sharing concerns, Kerala has once again assured Tamil Nadu of its willingness to supply all water from the proposed new dam at Mullaperiyar. The planned new reservoir will replace the existing 130-year-old structure situated in the Idukki district of Kerala, offering enhanced structural stability while maintaining vital water flows.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan conveyed Kerala’s readiness regarding this matter at the 31st South Zonal Council Meeting held in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Addressing the regional gathering, he highlighted the state’s objective of safeguarding local populations while fully respecting and fulfilling the ongoing water demands of neighboring Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, Mr. Satheesan reiterated Kerala’s established position regarding the financial and operational responsibilities involved in executing the project. Under the proposed plan, Kerala will bear the entire cost of building the new dam structure. In exchange, Tamil Nadu should assume complete responsibility for its design, construction, and final location, establishing a collaborative framework for peaceful inter-state water management and long term regional cooperation.
