Centre goes full throttle on bio-ethanol, pushes for E100 adoption
Defying criticism, the government is doubling down on its aggressive ethanol blending roadmap. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to officially recognise E100 for specially certified flex-fuel vehicles. Joining E85 under formal emission, specification, and testing standards, E100 establishes a clear regulatory pathway for automakers to roll out vehicles running entirely on bio-ethanol.
The ambitious policy aims to slash crude oil imports and curb carbon emissions. However, transition hurdles remain high: E100 is strictly incompatible with existing petrol engines and vehicles calibrated only for E20. Despite brewing backlash over engine modifications, feedstock concerns, and distribution challenges, authorities remain committed to driving India toward pure ethanol adoption.
