Shivakumar’s gun crackdown: will his own party buy In?

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has issued a strict ultimatum ordering the surrender of all unlicensed weapons by November 1, warning of severe legal repercussions for non-compliance. Announced during a Forest Martyrs’ Day event, the directive zeroes in on communities bordering forest fringes.

However, whether this bold move will find genuine takers within his own party remains dubious. In sensitive forest-fringe belts such as Malnad and parts of Old Mysuru, firearm possession is deeply embedded in rural life—often relied upon for crop defense against wild animals and quietly patronized by local political bosses. A sudden, hardline enforcement risks triggering severe pushback from influential rural vote banks and grassroots Congress cadre, leaving party legislators caught between government discipline and local political survival.
